Legend has it this formula originated in the Tang Dynasty imperial court, created to ease Consort Yang’s summer heat and restlessness. The imperial perfumer, knowing her love for lychees, ingeniously infused the sweet lychee aroma into the incense using secret methods. Agarwood and sandalwood act as the “monarch” to establish royal grandeur, chrysanthemum and mosla as the “minister” to bring refreshing clarity, phellodendron and coptis as assistants to add a subtle bitter-sweet balance, forsythia and angelica dahurica as envoys to enhance aroma diffusion, and nanmu adhesive powder as a guide to preserve the fragrance. When the sweet lychee scent emerges, fresh and lively like newly peeled fruit, Consort Yang’s frown would turn to a smile—thus the name “Consort Yang’s Smile”. This incense carries the timeless charm of “a rider gallops through the dust for Consort Yang’s smile”, echoing the Tang Dynasty’s magnificence in every breath.
